I have sold my business. So what next?

So what next?

Many of you will know that I sold my Property Management Business late last year. For the first time since 2005 I've had a summer without Property Lettings, Owner disbursements, property maintenance or renovations filling my daily schedule.

The dog has trimmed down thanks to the extra daytime walks, while I seem to have found a few extra Kgs. Though I've done my best to hid the triple chins under a beard. 🙂

So what has the future in store?

While building Copo, I became increasingly interested in what makes a business easier to grow, less reliant on one person, and ultimately more valuable. Between improving how we worked with owners and tenants, testing and rolling out new technology, and making plenty of mistakes along the way, one thing became clear to me. If everything depends on one person, the owner, the business is fragile.

Our Rebrand from RentWellington to Copo wasn’t just a name change, it was about building a business that could run through shared systems, clear responsibilities, and a team working together, rather than relying on one person to hold everything together.

After selling Copo, I found myself increasingly digging deeper into this simple question. What makes a business easier to grow, less dependent on the owner, and ultimately more valuable?

That question led me to my next chapter.

I’ve joined with Chris Small, James Sheppard, and the team at ABC Business Sales to help business owners strengthen systems, reduce owner dependency, prepare for exit, and when the time is right, help guide the sale of their business.

Naturally, I have a particular interest in Property Management businesses, though the principles of strong systems, good people, and clear processes apply to many businesses.

Building and growing my own business taught me plenty. Long days, mistakes, new technology, good decisions, bad decisions and eventually the realisation that great businesses are built to work without the owner needing to hold everything together every day.

If you’d like to talk shop, have a sanity check of where your business is at, or think through what your next chapter could look like, do get in touch.

What comes after selling the business is often the real surprise. 💗

All the best,
